Murray State University Theatre Arts Logos

Client: Murray State University Theatre Arts Department

Challenge: Design a new logo for the department.

Description: I and a partner were asked by the department head to create three logo ideas, of which I designed two. The client requested theatre imagery to be incorporated in each, as well as at least one idea using Murray State University’s shield logo as a drama mask.

Sketches and Iterations

The initial sketches. My partner ended up developing the “M” curtain idea while I took on the mask. I also decided to work on developing a spotlight idea.

I wanted to incorporate abstract spotlight imagery into one using a triangle in the color of Murray State’s official yellow; however, the client did not see it as a spotlight before being told, so I was asked to add the actual light as well as either a gradient or curve at the bottom of the light for a more realistic direction.

The client was happy with the first theatre logo I presented and didn’t want any further changes! The “h” and “A” successfully gave a sense of completion to the mask’s shape.

Final Logos

Mockups

The client requested mockups of the logos on stage crew shirts as well as on the theatre’s previous promotional posters; the latter was done by my partner. I also presented vinyl mockups for potential use on the theatre doors.
